Join Seattle Opera community partner Northwest African American Museum for Freedom Day to commemorate the day in 1960 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and 51 others were arrested in Atlanta for refusing to leave their seats at segregated department store lunch counters. Enjoy a musical tribute to this day from a Seattle Opera artist and hear from a panel of experts as they discuss the role of music in the civil rights movement.
The museum opens at 10:00 AM, and Freedom Day programming begins at 1:00 PM. Visit our events during the times below:
- 1:30 PM: Interactive Story Time featuring soprano Ellaina Lewis (Community Living Room)
- 3:00 PM: Panel Discussion: How Music Fueled the Civil Rights Movement (Legacy Hall)
