DIY Aria Workshop

Do-It-Yourself ARIA Workshop (Ages 6–12)

Join our Youth & Family Programs Manager Sara Litchfied for a journey into the world of opera! In this free five-video course, you’ll sing, act, create original opera characters, and write a song inspired by your character. This course for ages 6–12 is a great way to exercise your musical and creative muscles from the safety of home. When you’re done, you’ll create a video of your finished creation.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Below you’ll find a series of five videos with accompanying activities designed to guide you through the process of creating an opera aria. We recommend completing one video a day with its accompanying exercises over the course of five days. At the end of day five, you’ll create a video of yourself performing an original aria!

VIDEO 1: WHAT’S OPERA!?

Thanks for joining us on this opera adventure! In our first video, we will explore our vocal instruments, begin learning an aria (an opera song), and learn how to play a new game.

What you'll need:

Papageno's Music

Vocal Anatomy Diagram

VIDEO 2: CREATING OPERA CHARACTERS

It’s time to get up and move! Today we’ll be playing some theater games that encourage us to make fun, creative choices about the way we walk. We’ll also keep singing our opera aria and talk about unleashing our imaginations to create opera characters of our very own.

What you'll need:

Character Worksheet

VIDEO 3: ACT IT OUT

Did you know that opera singers need to be able to sing and act at the same time? Today, we’ll discover all of the ways that we can express ourselves through our faces, voices, and movements. We’ll watch an aria from the opera The Magic Flute, and then practice expressing ourselves as we sing.

Pre-recorded melody and accompaniment tracks:

VIDEO 4: THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE OPERA

There are so many people with different jobs and talents that work together to create an opera production. Today we’ll meet a few people that help to make opera possible. As we move closer to putting together our final performances, we’ll also discuss the process for adding words to our aria.

What you'll need:

Aria Lyric Worksheet

VIDEO 5: LIGHTS, CAMERA, RECORD!

Today, we’ll start by putting your opera knowledge to the test in a high-spirited game of opera trivia. Then, it’s time to put everything together into the final performance of your original opera arias. Submit your videos to the Dropbox link below, and we’ll pick the most creative performances to post online. We can’t wait to see your video submissions!
