Turandot
Giacomo Puccini
Set in China’s Imperial City, Puccini’s spectacular masterpiece recounts the legend of a bloodthirsty princess whose icy, vengeful heart softens as she comes to know true love. The lyrical and sweeping score features many memorable melodies, including the popular tenor aria “Nessun dorma.” Stunning pageantry, passionate confrontations, the famous riddle scene, and one of opera’s most powerful kisses make Turandot a monumental achievement not to be missed.
Oct 13 - Oct 27, 2012
Fidelio
Ludwig Von Beethoven
Justice and love triumph over oppression and tyranny in Beethoven’s sole operatic work – a sublime celebration of freedom. Devoted wife Leonore poses as a man (Fidelio) in order to rescue her husband, wrongly imprisoned for his political beliefs. Beethoven’s highly dramatic score elevates the simple, powerful human drama to a higher plane. Vocal highlights include glorious ensembles, the moving “Prisoners’ Chorus,” an ecstatic love duet, and a triumphant final chorus that fills the stage with joy.

Cinderella (La Cenerentola)
Gioachino Rossini
Brisk, catchy, and highly entertaining, Rossini’s uniquely Italian retelling of the ultimate rags-to-riches story cleverly blends tenderness and frivolity to fabulous effect. Kicking off with a first class overture, the comedic love story sails through flowery ensembles, ridiculous situations, and a lovely cavatina or two en route to a fairy tale finale. Cinderella’s toe-tapping tunes, colorful characters, and splendid orchestration are sure to brighten your winter.

La Boheme
Giacomo Puccini
Puccini’s unmatched gift for melody adds remarkable poignancy to the simple joys and heartbreaking sorrows of a group of young Parisians in this universally popular classic – a smash hit for over a century. Charming camaraderie and sincere emotional truth make these characters among the most appealing in opera. Their surging passions and pathos, masterfully conveyed by a tune-filled romantic score, make La Bohème easy to love – and impossible to forget.

La Voix Humaine with Suor Angelica
Francis Poulenc / Giacomo Puccini
In this exciting pair of Seattle Opera premieres two very different composers explore the fates of women who must come to grips with grave disappointment. In Poulenc’s sensual, captivating 40-minute monodrama, a desperate woman is shunned by her lover over the telephone and stumbles through a minefield of emotions towards an unknown fate. In Puccini’s sentimental one act, a noble-born woman who has joined a convent is disowned by her family, takes poison in despair, and miraculously passes into a state of grace.
