SEATTLE UNIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES

Wyckoff Auditorium at Seattle U, 901 12th Avenue
Tuesday, November 03, 2009
7:00 PM

Admission: Free

This year, Seattle Opera’s Adult Education series will focus on Verdi. Jonathan Dean, Seneca Garber, and guest speakers will look at Verdi’s life and operas from a number of different angles, including Verdi’s role in Italian history, his fascination with stories about parents and children, his obsession with Shakespeare, and how his career paralleled, intersected, and competed with that of Richard Wagner. With an expanded online presence this year, we hope you’ll join us for ongoing conversations about topics such as nationalism and multi-culturalism in opera, bohemian lifestyles versus bourgeois convention, and the evolution away from stand-and-sing opera and toward “collected work of art” music drama. We’ll also offer “Italian for the Opera,” once again in partnership with Washington Academy of Languages. And in the spring, we’ll turn our focus to exploring Seattle Opera’s world premiere, Amelia.
