A native of Barcelona, Spain, Rosa Mercedes is the artistic director of DUENDE Ballet Español. A Spanish and Flamenco dancer, Mercedes has served as a master teacher and panelist for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. She gives master classes and workshops throughout the United States, including movement workshops for singers at Florida Grand Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Tulsa Opera, Aspen Music Festival, and New World School of the Arts. She has frequently choreographed opera productions for Florida Grand Opera, including Bizet’s Carmen, Johann Strauss Jr.’s Fledermaus, Puccini’s Turandot, Ponchielli’s Gioconda, Richard Strauss’s Salome, Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila, and Verdi’s Traviata, Aida, and Un ballo in maschera. At the Metropolitan Opera, she has choreographed La Traviata and Carmen. Her work has also been seen at Opera di Roma, Michigan Opera Theatre, Baltimore Opera, Dallas Opera, Florentine Opera, Opera Naples, and Austin Lyric Opera, among others. Upcoming, she choreographs Turandot with Florida Grand Opera and Carmen with Opera Naples.
