Richard Stilwell made his Seattle Opera debut as Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte in 1992 (a role he reprises here in 2006) and has returned for the Doctor in Barber’s Vanessa, Mr. Redburn in Britten’s Billy Budd, Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and the Music Master in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. Originally from St. Louis, this American baritone has sung extensively in Europe, appearing with such companies as Teatro alla Scala, Paris Opéra, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Royal Opera Covent Garden. In the United States, Stilwell has sung with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Dallas Opera, and Washington Opera, among others. His many Metropolitan Opera credits include Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro, Figaro in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia, Sharpless, and the title role in Billy Budd in the Met premiere of Britten’s opera. He made his San Francisco Opera debut in 1973 as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and has since returned there many times, including most recently as Don Alfonso in June. Stilwell teaches voice at Chicago College of Performing Arts.
