Paul Steinberg has designed sets and costumes extensively for opera in Europe; his credits there include Cavalli’s Calisto, Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea, Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades, Handel’s Rinaldo and Orlando, all for Bayerische Staatsoper; L’incoronazione di Poppea and Wagner’s Lohengrin for Opéra National de Paris; Puccini’s Turandot for Welsh National Opera; Berg’s Lulu for English National Opera; Berg’s Wozzeck for Kömische Oper Berlin; Schreker’s Schatzgräber in Frankfurt; Verdi’s Falstaff and Otello in Cologne; Puccini’s Fanciulla del West and Richard Strauss’s Arabella in Antwerp and Ghent; and Verdi’s Trovatore in Bregenz. In the U.S., he has designed Handel’s Partenope and Weill’s Mahagonny for Lyric Opera of Chicago; Verdi’s Traviata and Wallace’s Harvey Milk for Houston Grand Opera, Handel’s Rodelinda for San Francisco Opera, and Britten’s Paul Bunyan and Rape of Lucretia for Glimmerglass Opera and New York City Opera. He made his Seattle Opera debut designing the sets and costumes for the 1991 production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. For Florida Grand Opera, he designed the sets for Handel’s Julius Caesar (Giulio Cesare in Egitto) which will be used by Seattle Opera.
