Nancy Gustafson made her Seattle Opera debut in 1987 as Marguerite in Faust and returned in 1990 for Antonia in Offenbach’s Contes d’ Hoffmann, a role she later sang at the Metropolitan Opera. Other Met credits for this Evanston, Illinois, soprano include Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, Musetta in Puccini’s Bohème, and Helena in Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. A frequent performer at Vienna Staatsoper, Gustafson also has sung with many other European and U.S. companies. Roles include Eva in Wagner’s Meistersinger von Nürnberg (at Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Frankfurt Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Lyric Opera of Chicago), the title role of Richard Strauss’s Arabella (at La Scala, Covent Garden, Vienna Staatsoper), the title role of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah (at Houston Grand Opera and Grand Théâtre de Genève), and the title role of Janacek’s Katya Kabanova (at Paris Opéra-Bastille, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne Festival, and Vienna Staatsoper). Most recently, Gustafson sang Chrysothemis in Richard Strauss’s Elektra at New National Theatre Tokyo. She has sung Violetta in Verdi’s Traviata in Vienna, Munich, Oslo, Glasgow, and Rome.
