International Wagner Competition Judge
Since August 2007, Hans-Joachim Frey has been the General Director of the Theater Bremen GmbH, responsible for the Oper Bremen (opera), the Schauspiel Bremen (drama), the Tanztheater Nordwest (dance), and the Kinder-und Jugendtheater MOKS (children and juvenile theater). Previously, as director of artistic affairs and opera director at Dresden’s Semperoper, Frey created the most economically successful theater in Germany. When the opera house was flooded in 2002 and forced to close for eight months, Frey worked with Harry Kupfer to stage Bizet’s Carmen in Volkswagen’s “Gläserne Manufaktur” (Transparent Factory). To celebrate the 800th anniversary of the City of Dresden, he revived the Semperopernball (Opera Ball) in 2006. Other notable productions there have included Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen with Willy Decker and works directed by Sebastian Baumgarten, Vera Nemirova, Claus Guth, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Günter Krämer, and Peter Konwitschny.
