Graciela Araya made her Seattle Opera debut in 1995 as Bizet’s Carmen, a role that she has also sung for opera companies in Vienna, Frankfurt, Brussels, Basel, Oslo, and Costa Mesa. Recent engagements for the Chilean mezzo-soprano include Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto for Nederlandse Opera, Mistress Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff for Opera de Lyon, Concepcion in Ravel’s Heure Espagnole for New National Theatre Tokyo, Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser for Ópera de Oviedo (Spain), and the Widow Begbick in Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny for Theater Basel. Future engagements include Herodias in Salome at Michigan Opera Theatre, Charlotte in Werther at Teatro Sociale (Rovigo, Italy), the title role in Marco Tutino’s Lupa at Teatro Comunale (Modena, Italy), and her return to Royal Opera Covent Garden as Marcellina in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro. Araya returns to Seattle Opera as Annina in Richard Strauss’s Rosenkavalier.
