Gidon Saks made his debut at Seattle Opera as King Heinrich in the 2004 production of Lohengrin and returned in 2005 to sing Fafner and Hagen in the Ring. In the same season, he sang the title role of Boito’s Mefistofele for De Nederlandse Opera, toured Europe in the title role of Handel’s Saul (subsequently recorded for Harmonia Mundi), and sung the role of Hagen in a new production for English National Opera. Other U.K. credits include performances with Royal Opera Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, and Scottish Opera. Saks has also appeared with Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Paris Opéra-Bastille, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Oper der Stadt Köln, De Vlaamse Opera, and Teatro Massimo in Palermo, at the Berliner Festwochen, Vienna’s Klang Nott Bogen festival, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and—on this side of the Atlantic—Canadian Opera Company, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and New York City Opera. Later in the 2005/06 season, he sings Daland in Wagner’s Fliegende Holländer and Kochubey in Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa for Welsh National Opera and Bluebeard in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle in Amsterdam and Brussels. Saks’s 2007 engagements include his first Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca and his debut at Washington National Opera.
