English mezzo-soprano Christine Rice makes her Seattle Opera debut as Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. As a company principal at English National Opera, her many roles included Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, Rosina in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia, Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Musetta in Leoncavallo’s Bohème, and Suzuki in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. At Royal Opera Covent Garden, her roles have included Sonyetka in Janacek’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Dryad in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, the title role in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia, and Miranda in Thomas Ades’ Tempest. Other roles include the title role in Handel’s Ariodante with Flanders Opera, Varvara in Janacek’s Katya Kabanova at La Monnaie in Brussels, and Carmen with Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Rice has sung at concerts throughout the UK, Europe, and North America, making her Edinburgh Festival debut as Erissena in a concert performance of Handel’s Poro with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In 2005, her engagements include Ariodante at Bayerische Staatsoper, the title role in Handel’s Rinaldo at De Vlaamse Opera, and Emilia in Verdi’s Otello at Royal Opera Covent Garden.
