A native of Salzburg, Austria, painter Bruno Schwengl began his career as a costume and set designer for opera and ballet with productions at the Teatro La Fenice, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, and Los Angles Opera. His work was first seen at Seattle Opera in the 1990/91 season for R. Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (costumes), Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (costumes and set design), and Prokofiev’s War and Peace (costumes). Schwengl also designed the sets and costumes for the 1997 Seattle Opera production of R. Strauss’s Rosenkavalier. In 2002, his costumes and set designs were used for Mozart’s Idomeneo at the Royal Danish Opera and Bellini’s Norma at Royal Swedish Opera among others. Schwengl works extensively in theater as well as ballet and opera.
